La Salle's Bob Dylan collection getting noticed

How many roads must a man walk down — before he becomes the subject of a major university archive devoted to helping researchers discern the meaning of his every move and utterance?

The answer, my friends, ain’t blowin’ in the wind.

The answer is at La Salle University, which runs what it believes to be the nation’s only academic collection focused on songwriter, poet, and troubadour Bob Dylan.

The Life & Work of Bob Dylan Collection, housed in the university’s Connelly Library, holds loads of Dylaniana — more than 1,000 items, including rare bootleg records, concert posters, fan art, journals, DVDs, and tour T-shirts and programs.

“They have hundreds, maybe even thousands, of recordings of Bob that aren’t readily available,” said Mark Sutton, an Australian who this year completed a doctorate on Dylan at the University of Sydney.

The school has embraced modern collecting, including the development of a compilation on the Vietnam War.

Baky also knew that prices for Dylan-related paraphernalia would only rise. So he began to gather items, accept donations, and buy what he could.

Today, hundreds of people connect to the archive via the Internet each year, though perhaps only 10 physically show up. They’re authors, researchers, aficionados.

“It’s an incredible resource of musical material — all the Bob Dylan material is there, including covers of Bob Dylan by other artists,” said La Salle English professor Stephen Smith, who drew on the archive to create a course, “Dylan and the ’60s.”

The class emerged from his interest in the relationship between lyrics and poetry, an intersection familiar to Dylanophiles.

“I stayed away from the ‘spokesman for a generation’ stuff,” Smith said. “I don’t know if he reflected what was happening in American society as much as he predicted it.”

Remember, he said, Dylan released “Blowin’ in the Wind,” which became an antiwar anthem, nearly two years before U.S. troops landed in Vietnam. And in 1969, with the nation riven by the war, he put out a country album, Nashville Skyline.

La Salle does not place a dollar value on the collection. But cost dictates much of what it can afford to add. Prices for sought-after Dylan material have soared, and even the stuff that’s commonly available — original records, signed covers, or art prints — can cost thousands of dollars on auction sites such as eBay.

Weirdly, the Dylan market has in a way worked in reverse.

Consider: Beatlemania drove a giant marketing effort that produced dolls, lunch boxes, and plastic guitars. Sales shrank as the band matured over time. Dylan, on the other hand, avoided the mass merchandising that could have accompanied his initial success in the 1960s. But now, older, he’s pumping out all manner of merchandise.

On his website, a “Like a Rolling Stone” T-shirt costs $34.99, and a “Shelter From the Storm” hoodie sells for $74.99. A signed harmonica is $5,000, and a set of seven signed harmonicas played by Dylan costs $25,000.

People sometimes seek to sell their collections to La Salle, like the Danish fan who offered more than 900 Dylan items. Archive directors loved his European concert posters, but already had much of the rest. The seller insisted on all or nothing, so no deal was struck.

The archive seeks goods that are useful for research, which tend to be print- and sound-related, while trying to discern what will be important in 50 or 100 years.

“You have to be very savvy,” said special-collections librarian Sarah Seraphin, who helps decide how the archive should grow.

She’s fascinated by the academic interest in Dylan but not a fan of his music.

Baky describes himself as a fan but not a superfan, interested in Dylan mostly from an archival perspective. He explored getting tickets for one of the Philadelphia shows at the Academy of Music, where the best seats were selling for $600 or more on secondary markets, then opted against it.

Students: Shooter was well-liked, fought over girl

"He was in our Tulalip newspaper that was just issued about him being homecoming prince. You think they are on the right path and you have no idea," said Topash.

"He was perfectly fine the day before. I remember talking to him. He seemed like the normal kid that we all knew," said Taylor. "He was always a very nice kid."

Marysville Police Commander Robb Lamoureux said the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but he provided no other details.

What's your first priority?


Our first priority is to fix No Child Left Behind. cheap essay writing services. We want to expand choice, but my view is that the federal government shouldn't mandate it. ... Many students can get a Pell Grant they don't have to pay back, up to $5,000. We lend $100 billion every year in student loans at an interest rate of about 4 percent to people with no credit history. Tennessee is the first state to say two years of community college is free. I expect more states to do that.

I'm [also] working with [Colorado Democratic] Sen. Michael Bennet to take the 108-question student-aid application form, known as FAFSA, and reduce it to two questions: 'What's your family income?' and 'What's your family size?' ... The complexity of the form is discouraging students from attending college. So the greatest barrier to more college graduates is this federal application form.

What do you think about President Obama's plan to create a government-sponsored college ratings system based on things like graduation rates, student-loan default rates and the percentage of academically eligible low-income students a school enrolls? Is this an idea that you support and are likely to take up? 

I think ratings are fine, but the U.S. Congress and Department of Education don't have any business trying to develop a rating system for 6,000 higher education institutions in the country. All we'll get is a lot of controversy, a lot of regulations and a lot of confusion. I mean, how is Washington going to compare Nashville Auto-Diesel College [currently known as Lincoln College of Technology] and Harvard? Leave that to accrediting agencies. Have a lot of transparency so students and families can find out all they can about colleges. We have a marketplace of colleges and universities. It has produced the best system of higher education in the world. We don't need the federal government overregulating it.

The Obama administration has proposed a $75 billion plan to make preschool universal for 4-year-olds. Where do you see that going in the new Congress?

The question is not whether early childhood education is a good idea. It's how best to encourage it. I didn't like the president's proposal because it would have the federal government paying half the bill after eight years but making all the rules about teacher salaries, class sizes, length of school day — decisions that should be made locally. I think a better approach would be to take the $22 billion the federal government already spends on early childhood education and give states more flexibility in combining those dollars with state, private and local dollars and give states the option of creating more vouchers for child care. The president's proposal looked to me like another Medicaid program.

What are you willing to collaborate on with the Obama administration?

Student loans is one area. We did a good job working with the president last year simplifying student loans and reducing the interest rate for undergraduates by half. We need to finish that job by simplifying the FAFSA and repayment options. Second, I would work with the president to fix NCLB. We're eight years overdue. We don't need the secretary of education issuing waivers and approving local school standards.

No matter what happens in Washington, though, it's states that will drive the nation's education debate on things like college access and affordability, preschool funding and adoption of the Common Core. Do you agree?

My answer to that is yes. And that's where it ought to be.

Through the program, mentees can seek advice from their mentors, who have had real life experience in certain industries and companies and are able to offer resume critiques and tips for the real world.
Many of the mentors and mentees were able to meet during last Tuesday’s kickoff event. Throughout the rest of the semester, the GUIDE executive board will work to create more opportunities for the pairs to meet, although they are encouraged to get together on their own and will earn credit for doing so through an incentive program.
The goal is for the mentor-mentee relationship to be an integral part of the Wharton experience for undergraduate juniors and first year MBA students. Ideally the relationship would last for at least two years — the duration of their time at Penn and beyond.
“Our hope is that the graduate students will learn something about themselves and be able to be a coach and mentor for their undergraduate student.” Undergraduates will have access to valuable advice they may not get from their classroom, clubs or recruiters. In the coming years, Kramer foresees a continued demand and growth for the program and its increasing ability to accommodate more pairs.

The study suggests that some schools and teachers continue using methods that cause little or no improvement in student progress, and instead rely on anecdotal evidence to back fashionable techniques such as “discovery learning,” where pupils are meant to uncover key ideas for themselves, or “learning styles,” which claims children can be divided into those who learn best through sight, sound or movement.

Instead, more traditional styles that reward effort, use class time efficiently and insist on clear rules to manage pupil behaviour, are more likely to succeed, according to the report – touching on a raw nerve within the British teaching profession, which has seen vigorous debates between “progressive” and “traditional” best practice.

Professor Robert Coe of Durham University, one of the authors, said assessing effective teaching was difficult, because exactly how pupils learn remains a mysterious subject.

“It is surprisingly difficult for anyone watching a teacher to judge how effectively students are learning. We all think we can do it, but the research evidence shows that we can’t. Anyone who wants to judge the quality of teaching needs to be very cautious,” Coe said.

The evidence collected by Coe also rejects the use of streaming or setting, where pupils are grouped by ability within classes or year-groups. It remains popular in many schools despite being supported by little evidence that it improves achievement. Ability groups can result in teachers “going too fast with the high-ability groups and too slow with the low,” according to the research, and so cancels the advantages of tailoring lessons to the different sets of pupils.

Instead, the best research suggests that teachers with a command of their subject, allied with high-quality instruction techniques such as effective questioning and assessment, are the most likely to impart the best learning to their pupils.

Daisy Christodoulou, a former teacher and author of Seven Myths About Education, a book that highlighted classroom orthodoxies, said: “This is a brilliant and helpful report, full of very practical advice and recommendations. I think it really moves the debate forward and has the potential to spark genuine improvements.

“It is upfront about the problem we face: we do not have as clear an idea of what good teaching is as we might think. So before we can actually discuss how to improve teaching practice, we need to clarify what good practice looks like. Otherwise we risk promoting practices that are not actually very effective.”

Michael Tidd, deputy head teacher at a Nottinghamshire primary school, said the findings should come as no surprise. “What remains to be seen is whether this report will reach the wider teaching community and have an impact in classrooms,” Tidd said.

“Until teachers, school leaders – and perhaps vitally, Ofsted inspectors – are brought up to speed with the latest developments, the impact will be limited.”

Christine Blower, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said: “Successive governments have ignored the importance of investing in teachers, including teacher education, continuous professional development and teacher retention. Instead, policy has erred on the side of believing that changing the status of a school will somehow raise the quality of teaching within it.”

Woman makes history at college and in Judaism

As it went, a rabbi once teased that a woman rabbi was like an orange on a ceremonial seder plate used during Passover. Neither belonged.

The orange was a sly affirmation from a friend, mailed to Waxman as a symbol of the history she made by becoming the first woman and the first lesbian to lead a major movement of Judaism.

Waxman, 47, took over in January as head of the Reconstructionist movement and president of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, the movement's seminary. buy dissertation writing services. She will be inaugurated as the movement's leader Sunday at the college.

"To have a woman lead a seminary and lead a movement is still, even in this age, a marker," said Beth Wenger, a professor of American Jewish history at the University of Pennsylvania.

Waxman is charged with connecting Jews within and outside the Reconstructionist movement.
"I think that the questions that we ask in Judaism and the way that we ask them are constantly evolving," said Waxman, a 1999 graduate of the college.

"As far as answers, I want to absorb them and reflect them, and I want it to be for the service of other people and of the Reconstructionist movement."

More than 40 percent of American Jewish adults under age 30 have no denominational attachment, according to a 2013 study by the Pew Research Religion and Public Life Project, and 63 percent identified as Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform. Fewer than 1 percent identified as Reconstructionists in the study.

"It's a small but growing movement with a lot of energy in the moment," Wenger said. "It's got respect for tradition, but also an interest in evolving and changing."

There are about 100 Reconstructionist congregations in the United States and Canada. Waxman visited 14 in her first nine months as president, speaking on the movement's growth and stance on critical issues.

"Sometimes I'm having very precise conversations about challenges on the ground, and sometimes I'm having much more global conversations about pluralism and Jewish identity," Waxman said.
The movement "was the first to work for equality for women, push for the rights of gay and lesbian Jews, and first to think about intermarried Jews and how to welcome them in rather than chasing them out," said Rebecca Alpert, a religion professor at Temple University and a 1976 graduate of the seminary.

Waxman, who lives in Elkins Park with her partner, Christina Ager, a convert from Lutheranism, understands the attention that comes from her orientation.
"I'm never unaware of it," she said. "I know the pioneers that came before me, who made it possible for me to be in this role."

But leading a movement of Judaism was not always on her to-do list.

Waxman grew up in a conservative Jewish neighborhood in West Hartford, Conn., but her family was influenced by Reconstructionist ideals.

They arranged to have her bat mitzvah, a coming-of-age ritual for girls, as one of the first in Connecticut to be celebrated on a Saturday.

After graduating from Columbia University as a religion major in 1989, Waxman served for 11 years as High Holidays rabbi for a small, informal congregation outside Syracuse, N.Y.

In 2003, she joined the seminary faculty and was named vice president for governance. There she laid the groundwork for the college's first strategic planning initiative and institutionwide assessment plan.

In 2010, Waxman earned her Ph.D from Temple University in American Jewish history, basing her dissertation on the founder of the Reconstructionist movement, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan.

Kaplan believed Jewish life needed to be reconstructed to survive in the next generation, an idea he articulated in his 1934 book, Judaism as a Civilization.

"At the time of its publication, women had just received their right to vote, yet had no rights in American Judaism," Waxman said.

The work's success garnered Kaplan a following that urged him to establish a seminary.
Initially hesitant to break off from the other movements, Kaplan gave his blessing in 1968. Founded near Temple, the rabbinic college upgraded in 1982 to the 27,500-square-foot Wyncote mansion of John Charles Martin, publisher of several newspapers in the 20th century, including The Inquirer for a brief period.

The halls are a maze of classrooms, offices, and lounges. The college enrolls about 50 students at a time, offering five- and six-year graduate programs. Graduates receive the title of rabbi as well as a master of arts degree.

Waxman's inauguration this weekend is in keeping with Reconstructionism's world view.
"There isn't a ritual that exists for our movement," Waxman said. "But we are creating one, like we love to do, and like we feel we're empowered to do."

Once you see how much you do this non-verbal, you can start to get rid of it by stopping yourself each time you go to start it or replacing it with something else, ideally something that is positive or more attractive to others.

Now, reactionary non-verbal communication is easy, because it's a response to what another person says or does. Reactionary non-verbal communication can be adjusted pretty easily because you know you're doing it. Reactionary non-verbal communication can be really good and perceived as such, or it can be bad and damaging. Examples of damaging non-verbal communication include eye rolling, huffing, aggressive hand gestures such as pointing, frowning, bad posture. As a real estate sales professional, you are in a physical environment, a house, an office, whatever your trying to sell or lease so the space is very important to you and your client, but in truth, the space is more important to you because of your non-verbal reaction to it. How you non-verbally respond to the environment you're showing is key in selling it. What you physically do, your client will see loud and clear, negative and/or positive. The awareness may be subconscious on their part, but it will be registered and it will stick. The client may not be able to put into words why they don't want to buy or lease a property, but the non-verbals that you expressed, that they registered, could be playing a huge part in that decision to not move forward.

So if you roll your eyes, if you cross your arms which is closing you off because you don't like the space, if you sigh, if your posture changes to something more negative, if your gesture base becomes negative, if your facial expressions sour... all because of what you see, the client will see that and read it. Clearly, the point is, you must become very aware of how you react to the spaces you show and of course the clients that you show the spaces to. What is your gesture base? What are your facial expressions and what do you do with your eyes? How is your posture? It is essential that you are aware of what you do non-verbally and if it's negative in any way, you change it, fix it, adjust it, replace it with something else that is more positive and attractive, more pro-sale and when you do, I have no doubt that you will see a difference in the reactions from your clients, your ability to build trust and rapport and ultimately, make more sales.
